The India Observatory (IO) at the London School of Economics (LSE) together with Asia Research Centre (ARC) over the past ten years have hosted, supervised and supported capacity building of over 200 early-mid and senior researchers working on multidisciplinary economic and social development issues related to Asia. These fellows have progressed to successful careers in their fields in academia and public policy across Asia and globally.

The LSE-IO/ARC Fellows Conference 2020 aims to bring together researchers from across these years. The objective is to provide an opportunity and further academic leadership for the Fellows through:

 

  • Presentations of current research and celebration of career progressions

  • Enabling Fellows to interact and form networks for future collaborations

​

At this conference the Fellows will have an opportunity to present their ongoing research and activities and share knowledge, as well as take time to discuss common areas of interest and develop relevant networks and enable collaboration for future research and engagement. 

​

The Fellows comprise of the following and were supported by these philanthropic donors over the past couple of decades:

 

Sustainable Development Futures

The LSE-IO/ARC Conference 2020 will convene past Fellows with the objective of exploring relevant societal challenges and opportunities toward understanding and enabling sustainable economic, social and environmental development.

This conference will broadly focus on the following themes with a strong commitment to evidence-based understanding of relevant issues toward Sustainable Development Futures.

 

  • Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability

  • Economic Growth and Inclusion

  • Fiscal Policies and Governance of Financial Institutions

  • Governance and Democracy

  • Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship

  • Sustainable Human Development

We aim to examine some of the following questions – What are the challenges and opportunities to enable environmental sustainability? What are the challenges and possibilities for tackling political and economic governance? How will the changes in the age of the gig economy, artificial intelligence, platform economy, growing urbanisation and industrial revolution 4.0 impact the developments in emerging economies and influence global development? How might the emerging economic, social and political challenges manifest themselves in policies and practices for the future? What are the potential approaches, new technologies and new solutions necessary to re-imagine the future of development in era of Industrial Revolution 4.0 and beyond?

Programme

The conference programme will be organised in New Delhi in the near future. There will be paper presentations, panel discussions and keynote lectures involving former Fellows and global experts from academia, public policy and the private sector.
