Research Programme

Industrial Revolution 4.0 is centred on Artificial Intelligence, machine learning and related technologies transforming as well as disrupting global processes of production and consumption. Technologies can be crucial to enable sustainable growth and inclusive development. Thus, this research and policy engagement focuses on understanding the impact of rapid technological developments in order to assess and enable a more equitable economy and society toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

The programme focuses on understanding and evaluating the deployment of AI technologies and prevalent algorithmic approaches with a focus on enhancing human capability and equal opportunity. It engages with the governance and practices of rapid technological change, while delving into the urgent questions of ethics, fairness, inequality and social welfare.

Featured Research

This presentation introduces an over-arching framework to envision and examine the effects of technological change on society and applies it to current developments in Artificial Intelligence. It uses the lens of the Circular Model of Technological for Sustainable Development to organise our knowledge about AI systems, and to push for an agenda for its management for societal benefit.

Dr Ruth Kattumuri is Co-Director of the India Observatory and is responsible for developing multi-disciplinary research and programmes. With over two decades of experience in higher education in UK and India, Dr Kattumuri has pioneered several innovative knowledge development programmes
